The Sherwood Mansion & Spotted Horse
Westport
Built in 1808, The Sherwood Mansion is one of the oldest buildings in Westport and occupies a special place within the communities’ consciousness. The mansion had fallen into complete disrepair and as part of the parcel intended for the development encompassing Urban Outfitters, the house became slated for demolition to make way for extra parking.
With the understanding that restoration and rehabilitation of historic structures, rather than demolition, is beneficial to the vitality and history of downtown Westport, our study of the site plan identified that this old house could serve as a perfect counterpoint to the modern addition next door… if we could just reposition it.
Work began to move the house for the second time in its history and it was placed atop a flood-proofed basement that could house a fully-equipped commercial kitchen. Upstairs, now freed from providing back-of-house requirements by the new basement, the previous residence now offered enough floor area to house a restaurant. The first floor of the building can now be experienced as a whole, immediately communicating the charm of this old residence to every patron who walks through its doors.
The team behind the relocation of The Sherwood Mansion received a Merit Award from the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation at a ceremony in the Hall of Flags at the state Capitol in Hartford, CT. The Connecticut Trust's annual preservation awards recognize outstanding achievements in protecting and enhancing significant historic buildings, landscapes and communities in the state, with the goal of inspiring others to do the same.
